Review

Les Nuits de l'Alligator, music festival originated by the Maroquinerie team in Paris is a huge festival spanning a dozen french cities.

Since 2005, the festival is both thematic and eclectic. A contradiction, you say? Not really: the programmingis all about the blues and its bad(ass) roots & weeds that created the original seen on the shores of the Mississippi river and that continue to make it thrive.

The "Nights of the Alligator" prove that the blues is not dead and continues biting strong! (Re)Discover what makes country, garage rock, soul, african music so vibrant today.

Artist

Turner Cody

picture

Turner Cody is a prolific songwriter who has been performing and recording for over ten years. He has toured Europe and the UK many times since 2003, opening for Herman Dune and Adam Green but also headlining as a solo act and with his backing band. He has appeared on some of New York's finest stages with the Citizen's Band. Cody has molded himself into an artist of great form and scope whose vision blends the old with the new, the hope-filled with the melancholic, the sacred with the profane.

Turner's first commercial release was on Rough Trade's 2002 "Anti-folk Vol.1" CD alongside Adam Green, Kimya Dawson, Jeffrey Lewis and others from NYC's legendary Sidewalk Café scene. Following official releases been Cody's "Quarter Century/The Great Migration" (LP 2006, Mad Monk.), "60 Seasons" (Compilation CD, 2007, by_rec/BB*Island) "Quarter Century" (CD, 2007 Boy Scout/BB*Island). "First Light" (LP/CD 2008, Boy Scout /BB*Island). Before this, Cody self-released five albums: "Turner Cody" ('00), "This Springtime and Others" ('01), "Who Went West" ('01), "The Cody Choir" ('03), and "Buds of May" ('04). Also Cody self-released a book of poetry entitled "The Return of the High Priestess and other Poems" and "New Moon Prayer and other Poems of Love and Fear".

In 2004, he co-founded the club night "Hassid Meets Hipster" which united two disparate elements of Brooklyn culture for three years. Together with Tim Love Lee he's hosting the Radio Show "Thrifty, Brave & Clean" on Brooklyn Radio.

Most recently, Cody worked with video director Chris Edley (art director, MGMT) and his song "Corner Of My Room" (from First Light album) was picked by French director Jacques Audiard to appear in his award winning film "Un Prophète" (A Prophet - fall/winter 2009/10).

"Gangbusters!", a brand new studio album is due to release the beginning of 2010. It features Herman Dune as the rhythm section. Jon Natchez and Kelly Pratt (both of Beirut) add melody and texture in poignant horn arrangements. Other guests in the studio have been Simon Beins and Sam Grossman of The Wowz, Dawn Landes and Tim Love Lee. more>>>
