Contenders for best South African hip-hop? Tumi and the Volume really lit up the Maroquinerie two nights in a row for their Parisian fans. Playlisted for the past few months on french Radio Nova, Tumi & band's reputation has been gaining traction in France with their blend of musical styles & influences. The amazing musicians who fit somewhere between hip-hop, jazz, funk and rock, accompany their imposing band leader for an hour and a half show that rivals the best of'em (reminds us of Just Jack, Q-Tip)...

Tumi and The Volume

Tumi is Tumi Molekane, one of South Africa’s brightest up and coming wordsmiths. The Volume is Tiago, a lead guitar-monster whose pitching melodies create an unmistakable beauty that softens the edges of the band’s sound, Paulo Chibanga, the beat-master, and Dave Bergman, an intense and broody bass player with a laidback sense of smooth. They met in a dusty basement jazz club in Johannesburg and have become one of the most popular South African musical exports, performing across Africa, Europe, and Canada.

Sakifo Records

Parallèlement au Sakifo Musik Festival est né le label Sakifo Records, qui édite les albums des groupes réunionnais Zong (« Paradis Thématik »), Nathalie Natiembé (« Sankèr » et très prochainement « Karma »), Toguna (« Sans Frontières ») ainsi que le groupe sud-africain Tumi And The Volume (« Tumi And The Volume »).

En août dernier, Sakifo Records et 2Temps 3Mouvements (management de Bazbaz, Java, Meï Teï Shô...) ont décidé de fusionner leurs catalogues, entraînant un métissage entre les artistes, réunis autour d’une même envie de créer en dehors des sentiers battus, d’harmoniser les flux entre le Nord et le Sud, de provoquer l’échange.

Un contrat vient d’être signé avec la principale maison de disques indépendante française, Wagram, pour que tous les prochains albums bénéficient du meilleur réseau de distribution en France et au Bénélux.
Après la sortie du "Sans Frontières" de Toguna le 12 octobre, et du "Karma" de Nathalie Natiembé le 2 novembre, le nouvel album de chansons malignes et coquines de Bazbaz prendra une place de cœur chez Sakifo Records.
Autre album prévu pour ce début 2010 : Tumi And The Volume. Tumi, qui vient de participer au dernier album de Laurent Garnier, pourra ainsi poursuivre la percée esquissée ces deux dernières années à l’international et propager son flow moelleux et conscient reposant sur des grooves imparables.
